In South Africa, where loadshedding has become a persistent reality, the adoption of solar power has gained significant momentum. Not only does solar power offer a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional energy sources, but it also comes with attractive tax incentives that can significantly reduce the initial investment cost.
Tax Incentives for Solar Power Investments
The South African government recognizes the importance of renewable energy and has implemented a range of tax incentives to encourage the adoption of solar power for both individuals and businesses. These incentives include:
Additional Tax Incentive for Individuals
In addition to the 125% capital allowance, individuals can also claim a 25% rebate on the cost of new solar photovoltaic (PV) panels up to a maximum rebate of R15,000. This incentive is only available for one year, from 1 March 2023 to 29 February 2024. To qualify for the incentive, the solar panels must be new and unused, have a minimum capacity of 275W per panel, and be installed at a residence that is mainly used for domestic purposes. The rebate can be claimed by individuals who pay personal income tax.
