A grid-tied solar system is a type of solar solution that is connected to the local power grid. These systems generate electricity using solar panels, and any excess energy that is not used by the home or business is fed back into the grid. (Feeding into the grid not yet applicable in South Africa). However, it is important to note that grid-tied solar systems do not provide backup power in the event of a grid outage. When the grid is down, the system will shut down to protect workers repairing the grid.
A hybrid solar system is a type of solar solution that combines a solar photovoltaic (PV) system with energy storage, often in the form of batteries, and a connection to the local power grid. This combination allows for the benefits of both grid-tied and off-grid systems, as well as providing backup power in the event of a grid outage. During periods of low solar production, such as at night or during cloudy weather, the system can draw power from the batteries. If the batteries are depleted, the system can automatically switch to draw power from the grid to meet energy needs. This connection to the grid also allows for backup power in the event of a grid outage, as the system can switch to using stored battery power to keep the home or business running. They also provide backup power in the event of a grid outage, which can be particularly useful in regions with unreliable grid power or frequent power outages.
A battery storage system (or Uninterrupted Power Supply System) uses the same hardware as a hybrid system without a solar panel (PV) input. The batteries are charged by the grid, when the grid (Eskom) is offline, the system is fed by the batteries. This solution will support customers with the elimination of loadshedding but will not reduce electricity bills.
